Calico, a company founded by Google in order to carry out research on longevity, has announced a collaboration with the Broad Institute, a biomedical research center and genomics founded by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and Harvard University . The aim is to work together with research on age-related diseases to find new treatments.
In September 2013, the co-founder and CEO of Google Larry Page (photo © Marcin Mycielski) announced the launch of Calico (California Life Company). One of the founders of Calico, Arthur D. Levinson, was appointed CEO. Levinson is also a member of the Broad Institute of the board so all in all the real surprise is that it took so long to get to a collaboration between these two research centers.
Eric Lander, president and director of the Broad Institute, Eli and Edythe L. completeness Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, he said that the combination of their knowledge of genetics, biology and chemistry combined with those of Calico in the therapeutic field will accelerate progress of therapeutic projects.
Arthur D. Levinson said that this alliance is a key in the Calico strategy to bring the state of science at their level best to work on the problem of aging. In September 2014, Calico had announced a partnership with the multinational pharmaceutical Abbvie for the creation of a research center dedicated just to age-related diseases, including neurodegenerative and cancer.
The work of Calico and his partner is in the long term. By the news came of compounds that, in animal models, showed the ability to fight neurodegeneration but it is just the beginning. Research and experimentation in this field require a long time so the results will come in the course of years.
Also it seems to be optimistic Bill Maris, founder and president of Google Ventures, a Google subsidiary that deals with venture capital funding various startups. Maris helped develop the Calico project, recently said in an interview that he believes it is possible for humans to live up to 500 years.
It remains difficult to tell when they get practical results but Google's investment in Calico are significant and very serious and prestigious collaborations. Find ways to allow people to reach 100 years in good health would be a huge accomplishment. To get to 500 years there all the time.
