According to the results, compared to those of normal mice with deletion of the gene Sprout show an increase of body fat and a loss of bone tissue similar to osteoporosis. In the group with excess Sprouty, by contrast, the mice were lean and with an increased bone mass.

A novel protein previously unknown and baptized Sprouty is a crucial factor for the regulation of body fat is both bone mass: this is the conclusion of a study published in the FASEB Journal magazine that shows how genetic manipulation in mice can produce individuals while obese and suffering from osteoporosis or lean, and with a higher than normal bone mass.

During the study, the researchers used two groups of transgenic genes, the first with a deletion of Sprouty gene in cells that specialize in fat and bone cells and the second group with high levels of Sprouty proteins expressed in the same cell type.

"Our study sheds light on the mechanisms regulating bone mass and body fat," said Lucy Liaw, a researcher at the Maine Medical Center Research Institute in Scarborough and co-author of the study. "Future applications in clinical and pharmacological field could be extremely interesting for these two diseases that can be considered epidemic in the Western world."
