Il vuoto dei fisiciThe emptiness of physicists

Segnalato dal Dott. Giuseppe Cotellessa / Reported by Dr. Giuseppe Cotellessa

E = ½h + nh

Formation of an electron-positron pair in the field of an electron (triplet) and in the field of a proton (pair), from high-energy photons

Couples of virtual particles populate the void, but they can not be revealed. The presence of supercharged cores could separate these pairs by capturing the electron and making positron observable.

I vuoti relativi sarebbero instabili.

ENGLISH

It is anything but empty. Instead it is full of phantom particles that strong electric or gravitational fields can call back to life.
What do we physicists mean when we talk about emptiness? The man in the street when he hears talk of emptiness instinctively thinks of a container from which the matter has been evacuated with suitable pumps. I would like to take the discussion on questions of principle and show the relationship between the concept of emptiness and that of ether that preceded it historically and from which it originated.
According to many physics texts, the advent of relativity would have erased the concept of ether from physics. Einstein changed his opinion on this subject several times. In some ways theoretical physicists agree on conceiving the void as an ether with very particular properties.
Let's go back to the container from which the air is pumped out. In this way we decrease the quantity of matter, then the mass contained in the container. So, if we think of the famous relation E = Mc2, which expresses the equivalence between mass M and energy E, where c is the speed of light, we are also decreasing energy. From this point of view the vacuum appears as the minimum energy configuration.
To truly get the vacuum we must therefore remove all the energy in whatever form it appears. Light also has energy: the "atoms" of light, the photons, behave like particles with energy according to the formula of Planck E = h. If we really want a vacuum, photons must also disappear.
The emptiness must also be a "darkness". The minimum energy state of any given system is fundamental. The emptiness is therefore the fundamental state of the interior of the container. Theoretical physicists use an even more extreme vacuum, one in which the vessel is the whole universe, a "state therefore in which we do not even have the right to exist.
All mechanical systems possess a fundamental state. A classic pendulum reaches it in the vertical rest position. In this case it would have zero kinetic energy and the minimum potential energy. The situation is different for a quantum pendulum. Due to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle it is not possible to assign a position and a precise speed to the pendulum simultaneously. The fundamental state described above is no longer acceptable. One takes over where both the position and the speed of the pendulum are different from zero. The pendulum fluctuates quantistically around the vertical.
If the oscillation frequency of the pendulum is worth the energy of the fundamental state it is not null but is given by E = ½h.
We can supply energy to the pendulum but only in discrete quantities, that is in how many h, for which the excited states will have energies expressed by the formula

E = ½h + nh

We know that Maxwell's field in a cavity can be represented as a whole consisting of a very large number of oscillators. Maxwell's field (electric field plus magnetic field) describes the propagation of light. The state in which all the oscillators are on the "vertical", that is, in the fundamental state, corresponds to the darkness. Exciting an oscillator compaionò of the photons: each oscillator gives rise to photons with particular characteristics, dependent on the oscillator itself.
The vacuum is therefore the state in which all the oscillators are on the lowest level of energy. In this type of theory the electric and magnetic field are conjugate dynamic variables; they play a similar role "at the speed (or rather at the moment) and at the position of the pendulum. Each of these fields also applies the Heisenberg uncertainty relationship.

We have seen that quantum uncertainty prevents the pendulum from settling vertically, in the same way it prevents the electric and magnetic field from being simultaneously null. These fields continuously fluctuate in the void and their presence can be detected through experiments with sufficiently high energy particles. The fluctuations are not detectable by a macroscopic body because they compensate each other on a sufficiently large region of space-time.

The concept of emptiness therefore seems much more complicated than expected. And let us also consider that the vibration modes of Maxwell's field depend on the cavity in which it is enclosed. As a consequence the minimum energy and the same fundamental state depend on the cavity.
In the Casimir effect, a residual force is observed between discharged plates of a condenser; this force indicates that the energy of the vacuum, and therefore the vacuum itself, depend on the configuration of the capacitor. It is therefore a vacuum relative to the cavity.
The electromagnetic field is not the only one existing; all elementary particles have a field that corresponds to a set of oscillators. All these fields fluctuate quantally and are never simultaneously null. This means that in the void there is a microscopic structure in which all the particles known as ripples on a sea continually appear and disappear. Seen from a distance, the sea appears flat, when viewed from close up it reveals intricate details.
So if we avoid looking at the emptiness in the details, it may seem like the "nothingness" that philosophers have always been discussing. The true structure of the void appears in extreme conditions worth discussing. We have said that vacuum fluctuates, in it are continually created and destroyed pairs of particles and antiparticles (N.d.R .: annihilation process).
In general these pairs to exist must borrow a 2mc2 energy, where m is the mass of each particle. Again for the Heisenberg uncertainty principle the torque can not exist more than a time t given by t * 2mc2 <h. The argument is valid for example for the electrons and their antiparticles, the positrons. Now suppose we have a very heavy core with a high electric charge. [At present no charge nuclei were found to produce the effects described in the text, so it is a conceptual experiment. Examples of materialization of pairs (eg electron-positron) that are based on variants of the same idea abound in particle physics.]

The nucleus tends to attract the electrons formed in the surrounding void and to repel the positrons. If the charge is high enough, the electron may precipitate free enough energy to compensate the 2mc2 amount used to create the torque. In this case there is a permanent separation of the couple. A nucleus-electron ion is formed and a positron is emitted. In essence, the process occurs if the total mass of the ion is less than that of the nucleus: it is precisely this mass defect that provides the energy necessary for materialization. It is said that virtual fluctuation has become real.

A second case of considerable interest comes from the Hawkins theory of the black hole. A black hole is a limit configuration of matter in which the gravitational force predominates over all the others and leads to a solution of the Einsteinian field whose radius is worth about R = 2MG / c2. In this formula G is the universal gravitation constant of Newton and we have G / c2 = 0.74 * 10-28 cm / g.
A black hole therefore has a radius proportional to its mass. The Earth would form a black hole a few centimeters in diameter. A black hole can accelerate any particle at speeds close to that of light within its radius and in approximately a time equal to R / c. The acceleration of gravity induced by the black hole grows with the decrease of its mass. A virtual pair near the black hole becomes real if at least one of its components can be swallowed by the hole in a shorter time than the typical limit value h / 2mc2 (with M we indicate the mass of the black hole, with m the mass of the components of the couple).
This requires that MG / c3 be much lower than h / mc2. The smaller the particle is, the less the mass of the black hole must be. It is therefore an unstable situation. A black hole can always emit photons, since they have no mass. In doing so, it loses energy and then mass up to the point where it can emit electrons, indi mesons, protons and so on.
According to the calculations the end of the black hole is catastrophic, the last tons of mass are emitted in a fraction of a second in the form of high-energy particles. So we see that sufficiently intense fields can reveal the structure of the vacuum and its fluctuations.
We come now to another very important subject, that of the symmetries of the void.
In general, a physical system has a fundamental state of high symmetry. A pendulum swings around the vertical configuration, the hydrogen atom shows a spherical symmetry, a vibrating membrane in the lower tone has neither nodes nor wombs that could diminish symmetry.
It is no coincidence that the global vacuum, that of theoretical physicists, shows all possible symmetry. If we rotate or translate this emptiness, it does not change. But even if we move with uniform motion with respect to it, ie by acting with Lorentz transformations, the vacuum remains unchanged.
In most of the physical theories proposed so far, the void is distinct from these properties. And one could also say that in the end it is absolutely impossible to distinguish an invariant ether under all the operations described above by a real void; the distinction becomes semantic. The old controversy for or against ether originated from a too narrow conception of ether; as a fluid with properties similar to known material fluids. Hence the controversy over the "wind of ether".
For all that said, the vacuum seems to be the state of maximum symmetry of a system. The existence of so-called "spontaneous cracks" of symmetry sets limits to this characterization. I will try to explain what it is by resorting to very simple classical models.
A two-dimensional classic oscillator can be imagined as a ball hanging from a wire or a ball placed in a semispherical cup-shaped potential hole. In this case the minimum energy position is also that of maximum symmetry; in fact, we can rotate the configuration around a vertical axis without changing it. The oscillations of the ball are not symmetrical but the set of all possible oscillations is symmetrical.
Instead of a hemispherical cup, consider the bottom of a flagon or a bowl that rests on the table along a whole circumference. The central point becomes an unstable equilibrium position, the minimum is instead reached along the contact circumference. All the minimum positions of the ball are possible "voids", none of the voids is symmetrical but "together it is global." In these cases we speak of spontaneous rupture of symmetry.

The small oscillations around one of these different voids do not see the complete symmetry of the vessel, the more energetic ones instead explore the whole basin and realize that it has circular symmetry. In the Weinberg-Salam theory a field structure similar to the basin described by me is introduced, the vacuum is not symmetrical and so are the small oscillations around the vacuum, ie the elementary particles described by the theory.

Only in the very high-energy collisions is it possible to see, in restricted regions of space and for brief moments, all the splendid symmetry of the theory.
It is possible to imagine theories in which there are similar configurations to the void but that reach only the relative minimum of energy. A particle that is forced to travel in a potential hole with many minimums and maximums may have many different types of relative voids. Classically it would be very difficult to distinguish between one void and another. If we do not give a sufficient push, a ball contained within a hole does not go on to explore other minimums of its own free will. Quantitatively, however, a fluctuation could induce a transition (called tunnel effect) between a minimum and another lower minimum. The relative voids would be unstable.
However, if the average life for such a transition is very long, a relative void may appear absolute to an incomplete observation. The elementary particles are the small oscillations around the void; if this changes, the particles that come, also change, change.
It is therefore the void that determines the properties of matter, we ourselves are small fluctuations around the usual void. And basically we call it "empty" precisely because we are small oscillations around this void. An area of space that would be occupied by another type of emptiness would appear to be very full. Inversely, beings born of the excitements around this void would think of us as oscillations of an extremely dense fluid.
Are there any other vacuums? Is our really the state of minimum energy?
The answer to these questions is probably affirmative; if there was a supervuoto lower than ours we could take some very serious risks playing with atoms. Once started, the transition could propagate at the speed of light making us and all known things disappear to establish a new type of matter totally different from the current one.
It is very unlikely that this will happen: in fact, cosmic rays continue to bomb all the matter of the universe for billions of years without such cases having occurred although they reach energies billions of times higher than those of our accelerators. Do not worry, therefore.
There is a fun example of relative vacuum compared to ours. By cooling the liquid helium, we obtain a superfluid. If we could get to absolute zero we would get a relative vacuum. At absolute zero, the helium contained in a vessel forms a single quantum state that represents a relative minimum of energy. If we could wait for more than 1040 years, the nucleus of helium would end up merging into heavier nuclei and forming, for example, iron. The liquid helium is therefore metastable.
Around this minimum, the system can perform oscillations consisting essentially of sound waves propagating through the fluid. These waves are quantized, their quanta are called phonons. So this kind of emptiness has its particles. Phonons can aggregate into more complicated structures, some rough phononic molecules.
Liquid helium does not show the spectacular variety of particles that characterize our emptiness and which make possible the existence of complex organic structures and life. If this were the case, there would be living beings who consider liquid helium as absolutely empty and phonons as a form of matter. For them the ordinary matter would be inconceivable or at least the fanciful fruit of theoretical speculations such as those we are doing. The walls of the vessel would be an insurmountable barrier: how could the sound come out of the fluid in which it propagates?
In the same way another emptiness could be present in this universe beyond some barrier not yet encountered. Some physicists have discussed possibilities of the kind (among them Coleman) and the idea that our emptiness is somehow metastable. We would all like our emptiness to be absolute, the best void existing and the others to be metastable like liquid helium.

It should be clear from the discussion that the particular minimum of the energy around which we live seems empty in the usual sense of the word, precisely because we are oscillations around this state. So we give it a special meaning because basically the average density of the material is very low. In reality, the vacuum could be relative as well as fluctuating and not very symmetrical and even less elementary. So let's do to study the void: we expect surprises.
