A parte i classici proclami del caso, scarsi o nulli i dettagli sulla nuova società fondata da Google con un investitore d'eccezione, Arthur D. Levinson, che si piazzerà subito al timone di Calico per la lotta allo scorrere inesorabile degli anni. Chairman ed ex-CEO of Genentech, società specializzata in attività biotecnologiche con un occhio di riguardo al DNA ricombinante, Levinson è anche noto per il suo ruolo nel consiglio d'amministrazione di Apple. In passato ha anche occupato una poltrona in quello di Google.
Lo stesso Levinson ha spiegato sul proprio profilo Plus che l'obiettivo di Calico è tentare di rispondere a domande come "Cosa si nasconde dietro l'invecchiamento? Potrebbe esserci un collegamento diretto tra alcune malattie e il processo di invecchiamento?": Calico punta ad accogliere nelle sue fila le menti migliori che si occupano della materia, per puntare con un lavoro a lungo termine a "fare progressi nel provare a rispondere a queste domande, e migliorare la vita delle persone". Una startup fondata da pezzi grossi che si inserisce in un settore, quello della salute, che sta diventando sempre più importante e remunerativo nei paesi maggiormente sviluppati con il costante crescere dell'età media della popolazione. L'interesse dei founder di Google per questa materia era già noto, visto che la (ex-)moglie di Sergey Brin, Anne Wojcicki, controlla un'azienda (23andme) che si occupa di mappatura genetica a scopo di prevenzione medica.
