 Un dispositivo trasforma un normale smartphone in un naso elettronico capace di annusare i composti volatili spia delle malattie delle piante. Descritta sulla rivista Nature Plants, la nuova tecnologia è stata messa a punto dal gruppo dell’Università della Carolina del Nord, coordinato da Qingshan Wei.

Il naso elettronico è in grado di annusare le sostanze organiche volatili liberate dalle foglie, permettendo così di monitorarne in tempo reale le condizioni di salute. Le sostanze sono analizzate da un lettore collegato a uno smartphone. Il lettore contiene una sorta di cartina al tornasole con reagenti chimici che cambiano colore a contatto con gruppi di molecole diverse.

Per Wei, “la natura e la concentrazione delle sostanze volatili liberate da una pianta cambiano quando è malata. Ogni malattia ha infatti una sua specifica firma chimica. Quindi - ha aggiunto - in base al tipo di sostanze emesse dalla pianta, grazie a questo dispositivo possiamo capire la natura della malattia che l’ha colpita. E possiamo farlo - ha concluso - in tempi molto rapidi, direttamente nel terreno, senza dover portare un campione in laboratorio e aspettare giorni per le analisi”.

 Thanks to a device it analyzes the substances emitted by the leaves
  A device transforms a normal smartphone into an electronic nose capable of smelling the volatile compounds spying on plant diseases. Described in the journal Nature Plants, the new technology was developed by the University of North Carolina group, coordinated by Qingshan Wei.

The electronic nose is able to smell the volatile organic substances released by the leaves, allowing it to monitor health conditions in real time. The substances are analyzed by a reader connected to a smartphone. The reader contains a sort of litmus test with chemical reagents that change color in contact with different groups of molecules.

 For Wei, "the nature and concentration of volatile substances released by a plant change when it is sick. Each disease has its own specific chemical signature. Therefore - he added - based on the type of substances emitted by the plant, thanks to this device we can understand the nature of the disease that struck it. And we can do it - he concluded - very quickly, directly in the ground, without having to bring a sample to the laboratory and wait for days for analysis ”.
