Nel caso dei superconduttori tradizionali l'interazione è di tipo fononico, cioè mediata da "quanti" di vibrazioni reticolari che hanno un'energia dell'ordine di poche decine di meV, così che Tc è di pochi kelvin. Nei superconduttori ad alta temperatura critica (HTS), la Tc è maggiore di un ordine di grandezza, fino a 125K. A 25 anni dalla scoperta degli HTS, non è ancora stata chiarita la natura dell'interazione all'origine di Tc così elevate. T
