La speranza è che possano rivelarsi utili per il trattamento del linfedema. Una possibile conseguenza di alcuni trattamenti oncologici è il linfedema secondario, un gonfiore di braccia o gambe causato dall'accumulo di linfa nei tessuti in seguito all'asportazione o al danneggiamento di linfonodi. È una condizione non necessariamente dolorosa, ma fastidiosa e talvolta invalidante, per la quale le terapie sono limitate e insoddisfacenti.
