They are shuttles that deliver the drugs to the right place.
An army of micro-robots could be the future weapon against tumors: they are tiny shuttles laden with drugs that, guided at a distance, are introduced into the body to deliver their contents to the right place at the right time. Tried so far in animals to study their efficacy in digestive tract tumors, the tiny robots are described in the journal Science Robotics by the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) group led by Lihong Wang and Wei Gao.
These are magnesium spheres covered with thin layers of gold and a derivative of benzene resistant to gastric juices. The layers uncover a small part of the sphere, which reacts with the fluids of the digestive tract generating small bubbles, whose flow pushes the sphere forward until the robot touches the nearby tissue.
The micro-robots are guided towards the tumor using a CT which uses the pulses of the infrared laser light and which allows them to be viewed in real time. Once near the tumor, the robots are activated by a high-power laser beam and continuous waves. Irradiated with infrared light, the capsule that surrounds them disintegrates, so as to release them and allow them to adhere to the tumor tissue, freeing the drug.
