Molti tumori sono caratterizzati dall'attivazione incontrollata di una via molecolare governata dai geni della famiglia Hedgehog . Si tratta di una via fondamentale per lo sviluppo embrionale. Tuttavia questi geni possono portare allo sviluppo di tumori se non sono inattivati nel momento opportuno o se sono inopportunamente stimolati. Led by civil engineering professor Jennifer Bridge, the  team  has affixed the water pressure sensors, which are held in PVC enclosures, to bridges in Florida’s low-lying coastal regions, where they can gather data about factors such as water level, storm surges, wave impact and water pressure. Using this data, the team hopes to one day offer communities early warnings about when a bridge is in danger of collapse or other failure due to storm damage.
