Whether it's a Chopin Nightclub, a Bob Dylan ballad or a Led Zeppelin guitar solo, in fact, there are very few of us who have never been touched or even abducted by the beauty Of a musical song. If, however, composer George Gershwin liked "thinking of music as a science of emotions," for science itself the powerful effect that a musical piece has on us humans has long remained a phenomenon that is far from easy to explain.

A recent study on the pages of Nature Neuroscience shows for the first time that a sequence of cleverly tuned notes not only touches the mind but also the brain: listening to pleasant music would be accompanied by the release of dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter known to scientists for years to the fundamental role it plays in inducing and maintaining behaviors that are necessary for the body, such as food intake or sex. This same neurotransmitter is also responsible for addictive behaviors, as in the case of drugs.

The study at the Neurological Institute and Hospital - The Neuro at McGill University in Montreal and the Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Music, Media and Technology (CIRMMT) also revealed that not only direct listening, but also anticipation of Pleasure associated with a musical song induces the release of dopamine, just like in the case of food or drugs. The emotional response associated with listening to music was measured by researchers not only in terms of dopamine release but also variations in skin conductance, heart rate, breath and temperature: all variables that showed correlation With the level of music appreciation. By combining different brain imaging techniques, such as PET and fMRI, researchers have also shown that in the subjects analyzed the peak dopamine is only in the case where there is a real appreciation of the music heard, While there is no significant variation if the song leaves the listener indifferent. In other words, the more emotional response to the song is accentuated, the more dopamine is released.

According to this study, even an abstract stimulus such as music - or anticipation - can trigger a neurochemical alteration that involves the ancient brain circuits at the basis of the sense of fulfillment, similar to what happens to food or sex . Along with brain imaging techniques, it was also possible to demonstrate that different parts of a musical track stimulate distinct brain areas: in fact, during the progressive stage construction of the track tension are the cognitive and motor brain areas to be activated (those , Therefore also involved in the prediction of an event), in the resolution phase there is the activation of the limbic system, that is involved in the emotional responses. That the music can literally give us shivers seems to be clear now. Understanding why the experience of listening to music touches evolutionary ancient brain circuits and leading important functions for survival is still something to discover.
