Here is the device that creates a "negative mass"

A team of scientists from the University of Rochester has developed a laser-based device that can create particles - so-called polaritons - that behave as if they had negative mass. That is, if accelerated in one direction, they move in the opposite direction.
They are very strange particles. They are called polaritons, and they are half light and half material. According to the physicians of the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester, who have just managed to create them in the laboratory, they will be able to build new generation lasers, able to operate with much lower energy than those necessary for the functioning of the current ones . But there's more: the polaritons behave in the laboratory as if they had negative mass. That is, to be precise, they accelerate in the opposite direction to that of the force that is impressed. Newton's second law postulates that mass is the relationship between force and acceleration, and the fact that they have opposite directions implies, from the mathematical point of view, that mass has a negative sign. The work of physicists has been published in the pages of the journal Nature Physics.
Creating the polaritons - which the study authors jokingly called magic dust - was not easy. First we try to understand what kind of entity it is. In the great atlas of physics, the polaritons are so-called quasi-particles: a name by which physicists call and describe entities that do not really exist, but that for the purposes of the mathematical description of the whole system can be considered really existing particles. An example: in semiconductors the electric current is linked to the interaction of electrons (ie particles with negative charge) and gaps (ie "holes" in the material in which an electron is missing, the charge is therefore positive). A gap is not a materially existing entity, but for the purposes of describing the system it can be considered as if it were a positively charged particle. A quasi-particle, precisely. The polaritons belong to this class of objects.
Go on. An electron-hole pair is in turn a quasi-particle, called exciton: the researchers managed to confine excitons in a so-called optical microcavity, that is a space confined by mirrors in which a light wave was passed to a particular wavelength, creating precisely the polaritons, or the result of the coupling of this light wave with the excitons. Analyzing the properties of these quasi-particles, the scientists have discovered, in fact, that they behave as if they were endowed with negative mass. A feature that, together with other properties, could make them the right ingredient for the development of more efficient lasers and even for use within quantum processors.
