Secondo le stime più recenti una persona su due nella vita rischia di ammalarsi di una forma di cancro, ma almeno 4 tumori su 10 nascono da abitudini sbagliate quindi modificabili. E se i casi sono in aumento, fortunatamente anche le guarigioni sono sempre più frequenti, tanto che ad oggi oltre tre milioni di connazionali sono vivi dopo aver ricevuto una diagnosi oncologica.

Annunciata come “grande promessa contro i tumori” nel 2013, l’immunoterapia ha tenuto fede alle grande aspettative che aveva creato con i risultati delle prime sperimentazioni. «La più rilevante novità del 2015 è stata l’immunoterapia – sottolinea Carmine Pinto, presidente dell’Associazione italiana di oncologia medica (Aiom) -. Gli studi presentati al Congresso Americano di Oncologia (Asco) di quest’anno ne hanno confermato le potenzialità e ne hanno approfondito i meccanismi nella capacità di rafforzare le naturali difese dell’organismo. Il tumore nella sua evoluzione blocca il sistema immunitario dell’ospite: sono stati individuati due di questi blocchi (i check point CTL4 e PDL-1) e abbiamo anticorpi monoclonali contro questi bersagli. Ora sappiamo che con queste cure il 20 per cento dei pazienti con melanoma metastatico è vivo a 5 anni dalla diagnosi contro lo zero per cento delle previsioni precedenti».
