After the last case of the thirty-six-year-old died in Bresciano, the answers of Dr. Flavio Saccomanno

We asked Dr. Flavio Saccomanno, president of AICPE (Italian Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery) to try to give some answers.

First of all, can a doctor know what is meant by "liposuction"?

«It is a surgical procedure that involves the suction, through special cannulas, of excess fat deposited in different body areas, often resistant to the gym, diets or other treatments. Depending on the clinical condition of the patients, the extent of aspiration and the treated areas can be performed both in hospitalization and on an outpatient basis, associated or not with other interventions. The duration depends on how many areas of the body must be treated ».

What problems does the patient asking for this type of intervention?

"The patient who decides to undergo a liposuction is uncomfortable living his body, just because the fat deposited is resistant to medical therapies, diets or gyms. This is valid both for overweight patients and for normal-weight patients but with excess deposited fat, with a limitation of quality of life and in relational life ».

Why this, more than other aesthetic interventions, is so risky?

"In fact it is not. Like all interventions, when correctly performed, in patients who have the right indications and respect the indications of the post-operative period, they are not dangerous. On the contrary, liposuction is one of the most performed aesthetic interventions in the world, both for men and for women ".

Is age an important variable for success?

"No, the important thing is that the patient has an indication of the treatment and a condition of health that can undergo surgery".

A patient who intends to undergo this surgery must address which centers?

"The choice of the surgeon is at the base of everything. It is important that the patient receives all the information on the procedure of the operation. From preparation to post-operative, complications included. There are no specific centers of excellence ".

If the intervention is successful, are the results perennial?

«The results are maintained over time, proportionally to the lifestyle and naturally to the patient's general health conditions».

Better to be operated in Italy or abroad?

«Italy has a great surgical tradition, especially in plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. Especially in recent years, thanks to advanced anesthesiological techniques and increasingly strict guidelines, interventions are becoming increasingly safer, more effective and more rapid. Going from a hospitalization scheme to an outpatient procedure, or with a return home a few hours after the intervention. It is essential, however, to respect the rules, ie the indications for the intervention, the anesthetic risk according to the patient's clinical condition and the post-operative period ".
