Grazie a due modifiche genetiche rarissime, la donna scozzese vive da 66 anni un’esistenza libera dalla paura e dall’angoscia. La sua particolare condizione è stata recentemente studiata da un gruppo di genetisti dello University College di Londra e dell’Università di Oxford. I ricercatori si sono interessati a Jo Cameron dopo aver scoperto che la donna non aveva lamentato alcun dolore in seguito a un intervento chirurgico alla mano. I risultati del loro studio sono stati pubblicati sulle pagine della rivista di settore Journal of Anaesthesia.

Durante lo studio, i genetisti hanno individuato nel Dna di Jo Cameron due mutazioni in due geni limitrofi: FAAH-OUT e FAAH. Quest’ultimo svolge un ruolo chiave nella sensibilità al dolore, nell’umore e nella memoria. La sua alterazione ha reso la donna molto smemorata, ma anche perennemente felice e del tutto priva di ansia. “Ora ho un buona ragione per non ricordarmi le cose”, ha commentato scherzosamente Jo. Quando la donna ha dichiarato di non provare alcun dolore in seguito ad un intervento chirurgico alla mano, l’anestesista Devjit Srivastava ha controllato la sua storia clinica e non ha trovato alcuna prescrizione per degli antidolorifici. È stato in quel momento che il medico si è resto conto della particolare condizione della donna. “Nonostante i moderni antidolorifici siano particolarmente efficaci, circa un paziente su due prova del dolore al termine di un intervento chirurgico”, spiega il dottor Srivastava. “I risultati dello studio condotto su Jo Cameron potrebbero consentire lo sviluppo di nuovi trattamenti maggiormente efficaci”.

I just felt like a happy soul, unaware that there was something different about me," the 66-year-old told BBC Health.
Mutations of the FAAH-OUT and FAAH genes
During the study, geneticists identified two mutations in two neighboring genes in the DNA of Jo Cameron: FAAH-OUT and FAAH. The latter plays a key role in sensitivity to pain, mood and memory. His alteration made the woman very forgetful, but also perpetually happy and completely free of anxiety. "Now I have a good reason for not remembering things," Jo commented jokingly. When the woman said she felt no pain following a hand surgery, the anesthesiologist Devjit Srivastava checked her medical history and found no prescription for painkillers. It was then that the doctor took into account the particular condition of the woman. "Although modern painkillers are particularly effective, about one in two patients experience pain at the end of surgery," explains Dr. Srivastava. "The results of the study conducted on Jo Cameron could allow the development of new, more effective treatments."
