Il fracking, termine inglese per fratturazione idraulica, indica una tecnica di estrazione del gas naturale e del petrolio dalle formazioni rocciose che li contengono presenti nel sottosuolo. I primi utilizzi di questa tecnica estrattiva risalgono ai primi del ‘900 nel North Carolina, nella cava del Mount Airy, dove tutt’ora è utilizzata per separare i blocchi di granito dalla roccia madre.

Il fracking consiste nell’iniettare a fortissima pressione  all’interno della roccia (scisto) contenente il gas naturale, migliaia di litri d’acqua in maniera tale da fratturare la roccia inducendo il gas a salire verso l’esterno e poi aggiungere sabbia ghiaia, granuli di ceramica e prodotti chimici come riempitivo per impedire che le rocce si richiudano terminata la pressione dell’acqua.

In questo procedimento si possono utilizzare sia fratture naturali che vengono poi ingrandite, che crearne altre artificialmente perforando la roccia con delle trivelle fino a 4-5 mila metri di profondità. Spesso il liquido al momento dell’uscita trascina con se alcune sostanze pericolose come mercurio e piombo, comprese alcune radioattive come il radio-226, prodotto dal decadimento dell’uranio.

Il New York Time ha fatto emergere in un’inchiesta il problema della radioattività intorno ai pozzi del fracking in Pennsylvania e da poco é arrivata la conferma scientifica dal Texas, dove alcuni ricercatori della Southern Methodist University hanno pubblicato un bollettino dimostrando che in un’area non sismica le operazioni di fracking hanno causato terremoti tali da danneggiare le abitazioni della zona, ma in molti sostengono ancora che i terremoti causati da questa attività possono essere solo di piccola entità.

Ma il primo collegamento diretto tra fracking e terremoti è stato ammesso dai geologi dell’Ohio che registrarono cinque eventi sismici a Youngtown con un’ammissione da parte di Glenda Besana-Ostman, sismologa del Dipartimento degli Interni americano:

Gli eventi sismici dell’Ohio sono collegati alla fase di fratturazione necessaria all’estrazione di gas e petrolio e non allo smaltimento delle acque reflue.

Attualmente questa tecnica è sotto monitoraggio a livello internazionale per il rischio effettivo di contaminazione chimica delle falde acquifere sotterranee e dell’aria, tanto che in alcuni paesi questo tipo di estrazione é vietata o sospesa.

Fracking, English term for hydraulic fracturing, indicating a natural gas extraction technique and oil from the rock formations containing them in the subsurface. The first use of this extraction technique date back to the early '900 in North Carolina, in the Mount Airy quarry, where he still is used to separate blocks of granite from the mother rock.

The New York Times has revealed in an investigation into the problem of radioactivity around the fracking wells in Pennsylvania and recently was likely the scientific confirmation from Texas, where researchers at Southern Methodist University have published a report showing that in an area earthquake not the fracking operations have caused earthquakes that could damage homes in the area, but many still argue that earthquakes caused by this activity may be only minor.

But the first direct link between fracking and earthquakes has been admitted by the Ohio geologists who recorded five earthquakes in Youngtown with an admission by Glenda Besana-Ostman, seismologist of the American Department of the Interior:

The Ohio Seismic events are linked to the phase of fracturing required extraction of oil and gas and not disposing of waste water.

Currently this technique is under monitoring at the international level for the real risk of chemical contamination of groundwater aquifers and air, so that in some countries this type of extraction is prohibited or suspended.
