Il ricercatore tratta con un gel a base di DEET (con concentrazione al 15%) esclusivamente la sua mano destra, dopodiché inserisce le mani una per volta all’interno di una scatola piena di zanzare Aedes aegypti a intervalli di tempo diversi (subito dopo l’applicazione, 1 ora dall’applicazione, 2 ore dopo l’applicazione, e così via). / The researcher treats his right hand exclusively with a DEET-based gel (with a 15% concentration), after which he inserts his hands one at a time inside a box full of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes at different time intervals (immediately after application, 1 hour after application, 2 hours after application, and so on).

Il DEET, o meglio “la DEET” è l’abbreviazione di dietiltoluamide, la sostanza insettorepellente  più efficace e diffusa al mondo. È utilizzata come principio attivo in tantissimi prodotti antizanzara, normalmente in una concentrazione che di solito va dal 5 al 35%, ma ci sono anche prodotti al 50%.

È molto efficace, ma è indicato per soggetti maggiori di 12 anni, poiché in forti dosi può causare irritazione cutanea e, se assorbito, può essere tossico.

Efficacia del DEET

Tra tanti principi attivi utilizzati per la produzione dei repellenti antizanzare, il DEET rappresenta al momento il più efficace e diffuso, ed è utilizzato in diverse concentrazioni moltissimi prodotti come ad esempio l’Autan Spray.

La sua azione repellente ha effetto anche su tafani, pulci, zecche e altri insetti molesti. Quanto dura l’effetto? A seconda della concentrazione di DEET, l’azione repellente sulla pelle può durare dalle 3 alle 8 ore, quindi in molti casi sono opportune seconde e terze applicazioni se si resta all’esterno per molto più tempo.

Quanto dura l’effetto repellente?

La differenza è impressionante. Al primo test, quello effettuato subito dopo l’applicazione, la mano sinistra (quella senza repellente) viene letteralmente attaccata da gran parte dello sciame, mentre quando lo scienziato inserisce la mano destra, quella trattata col DEET, gli insetti si guardano bene dall’atterrare sulla sua pelle.

Già trascorse due ore dall’applicazione, però, si vede bene come solo pochissime zanzare, le più resistenti, comincino ad appoggiarsi ai margini del dorso della mano destra, mentre un’ora più tardi, a tre ore in totale trascorse dall’applicazione del gel, le zanzare cominciano ad atterrare in numero significativo sulle dita del ricercatore (sebbene egli dichiari che non mordano ancora). Ma è solo questione di tempo: trascorse 5 ore dall’applicazione, lo scienziato ripete il test per l’ultima volta e, come ci si aspettava, ora le zanzare cominciano a pungere.

La conclusione del dottor Wheeler è che il gel a base di DEET concentrato al 15% protegge dalle punture per un periodo di tempo di circa 4 ore dall’applicazione.

DEET, or rather "DEET" is the abbreviation of diethyltoluamide, the most effective and widespread insect repellent substance in the world. It is used as an active ingredient in many anti-mosquito products, normally in a concentration that usually ranges from 5 to 35%, but there are also 50% products.

It is very effective, but is indicated for subjects over 12 years of age, since in large doses it can cause skin irritation and, if absorbed, can be toxic.

Effectiveness of DEET

Among the many active ingredients used for the production of mosquito repellents, DEET currently represents the most effective and widespread, and is used in different concentrations in many products such as Autan Spray.

Its repellent action also has an effect on horseflies, fleas, ticks and other annoying insects. How long does the effect last? Depending on the concentration of DEET, the repellent action on the skin can last from 3 to 8 hours, so in many cases second and third applications are appropriate if you stay outside for much longer.

How long does the repellent effect last?

The difference is impressive. In the first test, the one carried out immediately after the application, the left hand (the one without repellent) is literally attacked by a large part of the swarm, while when the scientist inserts his right hand, the one treated with DEET, the insects are careful not to land on his skin.

However, already two hours after the application, it is clear how only very few mosquitoes, the most resistant, begin to rest on the edges of the back of the right hand, while an hour later, three hours in total after the application of the gel, mosquitoes begin to land on the researcher's fingers in significant numbers (although he claims they are not yet biting). But it's only a matter of time: 5 hours after the application, the scientist repeats the test for the last time and, as expected, the mosquitoes now begin to bite.

Dr. Wheeler's conclusion is that the 15% concentrated DEET-based gel protects against bites for a period of approximately 4 hours after application.
