Respirare Nel Modo Sbagliato

respiratoria.

Using an inhaler correctly is essential to ensure the medication reaches your lungs effectively. Let's explore the most common mistakes and how to avoid them, thus improving your respiratory health.

Forgetting to Shake the Bottle

When using an inhaler, it is essential to shake the bottle before each use. This step mixes the medication and the propellant, ensuring each dose is balanced. If you don't shake, you may receive the wrong dose of medication. To avoid this mistake, be sure to shake the bottle vigorously 10-15 times before use.

Aiming the Wrong Way

Another common mistake is pointing the inhaler opening up or down when inhaling medication. This can reduce the effectiveness of treatment, as the medication may not reach your lungs. Be sure to point the device toward the back of your throat so that the medication enters your airways.

Poorly Sealed Lips

Your lips play a crucial role in ensuring medication is delivered properly. If you don't form a complete seal around the inhaler opening, air and medication can leak out. Make sure your lips seal tightly around the inhaler to maximize medication delivery.

Poor Posture

Posture affects your ability to breathe effectively. Sitting or slumping can limit your lung capacity. Be careful to maintain an upright posture, preferably standing, when using your inhaler. This helps your lungs function optimally and ensures optimal medication delivery.

Breathing the Wrong Way

Many users breathe at the wrong time when using their inhaler. If you breathe in after pressing the inhaler button, much of the medication can settle in your mouth and throat, reducing the effectiveness of the therapy. If you fill your lungs with air before activating the device, you won't leave room for the medication. To improve this, consider using a spacer, which allows you to inhale the medicine when you're ready.

Ignoring the Medication Level

You may find yourself using an inhaler that's almost empty. Often, some of the propellant remains in the bottle even when the medicine is finished, making it difficult to know how much you're actually taking. Some inhalers have a counter to track the remaining doses. If yours doesn't, ask your pharmacist how many doses are left and note the start date and each inhalation you take.

Rushing Between Puffs

If you take another puff immediately after the first, the medication and propellant may not have enough time to mix again. This means your next dose may not be as effective as expected. It's advisable to wait about a minute before taking another puff.

Forgetting to Prime the Doctor

“Priming” a new inhaler is a crucial step that shouldn't be overlooked. Before using it for the first time, spray it into the air to ensure you have the right mixture of medication and propellant. Before spraying, shake the bottle for five seconds between each pump, repeating this process a total of four times; you should also do this if you drop the inhaler or if you haven't used it for a couple of weeks.

Do Not Exhale Before Inhaling

To increase the effectiveness of your inhaler, it's important to exhale completely before taking the medication. Filling your lungs with air before inhaling can reduce the amount of medication that enters your lungs. Exhale deeply to free up space and help the medication enter the small passages of your lungs.

Check Your Inhaler for Debris

Always check that the opening of your inhaler is clean and free of debris, such as lint or dust. There may be unwanted particles inside that can enter your lungs while you inhale. Check the opening before each use and cover the mouthpiece when not in use to protect it.

Breathing Too Fast

Finally, if you exhale immediately after inhaling, the medication may not have enough time to work and will not work as expected. Hold your breath for about 10 seconds after inhaling a puff to maximize the effectiveness of the treatment.

Always Read the Instructions

Each inhaler has specific characteristics; some should be used daily, while others only as needed. It is essential to read the instructions and consult your doctor or pharmacist for proper use. Only then will you get the most out of your treatment and improve your respiratory health.
