Geothermal body pitches for government support

The National Geothermal Centre (NGC) has published a roadmap for scaling up the sector and urged the UK government to back a national rollout.

According to the NGC, geothermal has the potential to contribute 10GW of heat and 1.5GW of electricity by 2050, supporting as many as 50,000 direct and 125,000 indirect jobs. By contrast, the Jackdaw gas field approved today by the UK government is predicted to deliver just 27 direct jobs.

Currently, the UK has around 1GW of geothermal heat capacity, largely in the form of ground source heat pump systems. The country’s first geothermal power plant came online in Cornwall earlier this year (February 2026), its 3MW capacity producing enough electricity for around 10,000 homes.

To grow the sector, the roadmap makes more than a dozen policy recommendations. These include three ‘immediate asks’ of the government: make the NGC the national delivery body for geothermal; unlock investment with a costed exploration-risk pilot; and publish a pipeline for potential geothermal heat networks.

“This is a landmark moment for the National Geothermal Centre and indeed the acceleration of geothermal energy in the UK, which until now has had no national strategy,” said NGC CEO Dr Charlotte Adams.

“Beneath our feet sits a source of heat and power that no other country can switch off, available day and night. Geothermal offers secure, home-grown energy and this roadmap shows government exactly how to deliver it at scale.”

The UK has been a net gas importer since 2004 and spent around £50bn on gas imports following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Under the 10GW heat scenario, the NGC claims geothermal could displace about 82TWh of gas each year, equivalent to roughly half of the UK’s 2025 LNG imports.

The roadmap also makes the case that geothermal can help retain drilling and engineering skills from the UK’s oil and gas sector, where around 20,000 jobs a year are being lost. According to NGC estimates, 75 to 80 per cent of a future geothermal workforce would work in vocational, operational, technician and engineering roles.

“Our strategic roadmap concludes that the UK already has the essential ingredients to become a leading geothermal nation: abundant resources, proven technology, world-class scientific expertise, an experienced energy workforce and growing demand for secure, low-carbon heat,” said Adams.

“What the UK lacks is a supportive and investable environment in which to deploy them. Our message to government is clear: back geothermal now, and the UK can turn a proven resource into secure, home-grown heat and power for decades to come.”
